July 2023.
“The shelling on 18 and 19 July caused the destruction of 60 tonnes of grain and damage to port infrastructure,” the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food reports.
“For four days in a row, there have been attacks on the ‘grain corridor’ facilities in Odesa region. On 21 July, two rockets hit a grain storage facility and caused a fire. The third missile struck when firefighters were extinguishing the flames,” Radio Liberty says.
November 2023.
“On 8 November, russia attacked the ports of Odesa region, damaging a Liberian-flagged ship. A harbor pilot (a citizen of Ukraine) was killed, a port employee and three crew members (citizens of the Republic of the Philippines) were injured,” Ukrinform reports.
October 2024.
“On 6 October, a civilian Saint Kitts and Nevis-flagged ship with corn grain on board was damaged in an attack. On 7 October, a russian ballistic missile hit a civilian Palau-flagged vessel, killing a Ukrainian and injuring five foreign citizens. On 10 October, the russians destroyed a UN humanitarian aid ship for Palestine,” NV says.
Today, the price of bread is the life of a Ukrainian farmer harvesting a crop, or a port worker loading grain onto a ship, or a hungry child from a distant African country.
We must resist this evil, because as the wise of this world have said: “when a people choose bread over freedom, they eventually lose everything, including bread.”

Since ancient times, people have treated bread with care and reverence. A symbol of life and a long-standing sign of wealth, bread has always been given the most honourable place on the table, glorified in proverbs and folklore.
The Ukrainian nation knows from experience that bread is also a lever of influence – the Holodomor in the Soviet period, the shelling of fields, granaries and grain ships nowadays. It is not just Ukraine that is at risk because of such actions by russia.
